Story of Impact | Meet Andrew Dunlap

When Program I.M.P.A.C.T. launched in 2017, student Andrew Dunlap and his mother were first in line to sign up. He was in the third grade, and he was excited to explore the program’s different subjects with children his own age. Andrew also wanted to improve his math skills.

Once enrolled, he joined Program I.M.P.A.C.T.’s math tutoring session with Uncle Johnny (Johnny Smith, Math Tutor). He began to complete his math homework, and he also began to understand his math lessons! This built a fundamental understanding of the subject, which helps him to this day as he continues school, grows his passion for STEM and explores the boundless opportunities.

At Tendaji, we are focused on the whole child. So it’s no surprise that Andrew became interested in other fields. During his first year at the program, he developed a passion for the field of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). He loved conducting hands-on projects at school and home, so when Program I.M.P.A.C.T. challenged him to grow his skills in STEM, he could not get enough. From performing chemical reactions to constructing protective cases with the capability to protect an egg from yards up, he loved it all!

As Andrew’s math skills improved and his love of STEM blossomed, he also grew in other important academic areas. Through reading lessons and book fairs, he gained applicable lessons in literacy. He also loved his money management lessons conducted by First Security Bank, which helped him understand how banks work and open his first savings account.

Since joining Program I.M.P.A.C.T., Andrew has joined his school’s robotics class. Using the STEM and team skills gained from our program, he has completed exciting projects. He even built a small motorized car! We are so proud of Andrew and the great young man he is growing up to be!

“Program I.M.P.A.C.T. is a fun place where you can connect with students at other schools and learn from amazing teachers who truly care about you.” – Andrew Dunlap
