When summer came around, plans and camps across the country were canceled entirely because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. For families with children who need consistent educational engagement, this lack of summer opportunities only contributes to the summer slide many parents and educators dread. The Tendaji team, realizing the importance of summer engagement, decided to make their A.R.T. Impact Summer Camp virtual this year, so families could continue to see positive impacts over the break.
The activities were exactly what students needed to stay engaged during the summer months. One student, who was new to the program and has special needs, required additional support to remain involved during virtual sessions. The multiple conversations taking place during sessions would overload his sensory input, making it difficult for him to participate.
Once the Tendaji staff collaborated with his family to better understand his needs, not only were the lesson plans adjusted for him, counselors utilized the flexibility of the virtual camp to interact with him and provide the needed assistance and virtual praise to excel. Immediately, his personality shined, and he gained confidence while learning about the arts, literature and the world of STEM.
